Transparent by design

Publication methodology

The source export is broad. The indexable HN Tube collection is deliberately narrow.

Source and attribution

HN Tube uses the HackerTube data export dated October 31, 2026, released under ODC-By 1.0, and credits both HackerTube and the open-index/hacker-news archive. Comments remain the work of their authors.

Video eligibility

  • At least one retained mention must be labeled rec or strong_rec.
  • At least one source comment and direct Hacker News URL must be available.
  • Neutral references, jokes and criticism do not qualify a video by themselves.
  • The first release is limited to the 300 highest-ranked eligible records.

Recommendation score

The documented score equals distinct months with a positive recommendation plus 0.5 times distinct months with a strong recommendation. Multiple comments in one month do not repeatedly increase the monthly score.

Topic eligibility

A topic is published only when at least eight of the selected videos belong to it. Every published topic has an original introduction and two-way internal links with its videos. Fewer complete topics are preferable to forty empty shells.

Known limits

Stance labels, summaries and taxonomy assignments were generated by a language model and may contain errors. New videos have less time to accumulate recurring recommendations. A high score measures repeated positive attention in this dataset—not accuracy, universal approval or teaching quality.

Expansion gate

HN Tube will not expand toward 1,000 video pages if fewer than 20% of published video pages are indexed. If fewer than 60% of topic pages are indexed, topic templates and introductions must be improved before more pages are added.
